"Amy was everything one could want in a daughter: thoughtful, nurturing, soft-spoken, and well-trained in the domestic skills she would need for her future. She could often be found holding a niece or nephew in her arms, singing or reading to them. 'That youngest daughter of yours will make a fine wife and mother,' he had heard many times from admiring men. However, comments like that from his contemporaries had begun to disturb him. Amy was young; his peers were growing old."
