Being Grammy J

So we arrived home Sunday afternoon from our rock 'n roll weekend in LA - playing in the sand at Venice Beach and attending a thrilling production of The Who's Tommy - and within 24 hours I was on a plane to Ohio to babysit Darling Granddaughter while her Mum attends a YW High Adventure Activity.

Oh, sure, Mama's doing exciting things like rock climbing and hiking and crawling around in a cave and sleeping in a tent - but I'm having my own High Adventure with an eleven month old baby girl.

She misses her parents. It breaks my heart when she crawls to the garage/kitchen door and wails for Mama or scoots to the front door searching for Daddy, who spends long, grueling days in his medical school rotations.

"It's just you and me, kid," I tell her when Daddy leaves for the day.

I have discovered that my attention span is shorter than hers. She can play hide-and-seek and peek-a-boo longer than I can.

And when she naps, her exhausted High Adventure Grammy naps, too.

This evening, after a splashy bath, clean diaper, PJs, sweet-smelling baby lotion and the one bottle she is allowed per day (Grammy has her Instructions) Darling Granddaughter smiles and looks up at me with her frank, round blue eyes.

Did I mention she has her Daddy's eyes?

I love book clubs

I love Lost. I'm often, well, lost, and I miss a lot of the literary and historical references, but I'm still addicted to the show. Remember the book club in New Othertown? Just before the plane crashed? Villain Ben realizes he hadn't been invited.

"I guess that means I've been kicked out of the book club," he says when he sees the Others emerge from Juliet's house, incriminating copies of the book in hand.

Anyway, I loved this cartoon.

And I love my neighborhood book club, The Wednesday Afternoons Book Club. We read good books and every month we meet for stimulating discussions and chocolate. That makes for a perfect Wednesday afternoon for me.
